This week we talked about kindness and respect in our classroom. Learning about grace and courtesy is an important part of the Montessori curriculum. This aids the children’s social, emotional and physical development through positive interactions with their teachers and classmates. The children learn about manners, consideration for others and co-operation in the daily routine. We encourage “please” and “thank you” not just to teachers but to everybody. Kindness means doing your share of the tidying up, using kind words and taking turns with toys.
Every child gets a turn at carrying out duties such as handing out the lunches or being the door leader. They learn about responsibility and about completing a task for the benefit of their classmates. The children love taking their turn at these jobs – they know they are being great helpers!
